In 1957, I was still a student at the Central School and I got an audition for The Old Vic and I went to the audition and I was cast as Ophelia in Hamlet.

It didn’t go down very well, the performance, and people were outraged that they said the so-called national theatre because we didn’t have one then, of Great Britain, you should cast a complete unknown newcomer as Ophelia was disgraceful.

But Michael Benthall cast me and Michael Benthall stood by me and he said “Now I’m not going to send you packing” he said, “I’m keeping you here Judi and you’re going to play a whole series of parts and understudy and have to work very hard this season” and not only did he keep me there for the 57/58 season, but 58/59, 59/60 and 60/61.
