The collection of modernist photographs of pop star Elton John is to go display at Tate Modern art gallery in central London, the gallery revealed Wednesday.

Elton John's personal collection is rated as one of the world's greatest private collections of photography, featuring modernist images from the 1920s to the 1950s.

More than 150 works will be featured from over 60 artists, and the exhibition will consist entirely of rare vintage prints, all created by the artists themselves. It will showcase works by key figures such as Man Ray, Andre Kertesz, Berenice Abbot, Alexandr Rodchenko and Edward Steichen.

Nicholas Serota, the director of Tate, said: "This will be a truly unique exhibition. There are few collections of modernist photography in the UK, so we are delighted that Elton John has allowed us to draw on his incredible collection and give everyone a chance to see these iconic works."

Elton John, who made his name as a singer-songwriter from the early 1970s onwards, said: "The modernist era in photography is one of the key moments within the medium and collecting work from this period has brought me great joy over the last 25 years. Each of these photographs serves as inspiration for me in my life; they line the walls of my homes and I consider them precious gems."

The exhibition will open at Tate Modern in November.
