When you saw a new Netflix teen comedy-drama film jump on your social media feed, it’s hard to resist the impulse to click on it and spend a night with it and a bag of chips.
As you can probably tell by the title, the movie is about Sierra, a girl who does not fit the traditional standard of physical beauty but has a personality full of wit and charm. In Chinese school, you can probably earn yourself a fan club if you are a top student like Sierra, but in an American high school, if you don’t have a pretty face or a body which can fit in a cheerleader costume, welcome to the losers’ club.
Just like every superhero movie has a talkative villain, every American high school drama has to have a typical mean girl, which in this film, is Miss Veronica. As a pretty cheerleader, Veronica has a squad and a line of suitors. And she always attempts to make Sierra's life more miserable by showering her with cruel taunts and comments (especially regarding her appearance).
Most of the times, Fairy tales are exclusive to princess, unless God wants to play a joke on you. That’s how the story begins. One day, when Jamey, a handsome football player from another school, asks Veronica for her number, she gives him Sierra's number instead, just to embarrass her. What happen next is Jamey texts Sierra, believing she is Veronica. After texting and flirting with each other for a while, Sierra soon begins to like Jamey, although she realizes he thinks he's texting someone else. One lie leads to another, in the fear of scaring Jamey away, Sierra decides to keep this secret and pretend to be Veronica……
High school boys and girls can always make simple things complicate. Despite how cliché the plot is, there’s still something special about this story. For years, teen romantic movies have always been about the beautiful kids fall in love and go to prom hand in hand. But not everyone is a successful kid and has a perfect life. What’s wrong with being a loser? Maybe in a way we are all Sierra, who are insecure and sensitive, try to stay positive about things but always end up being disappointed and hurt. We feel lost, not knowing who we really are. But just like the song Sierra wrote at the end of the movie, everyone loves rose, but maybe we are sunflowers, which are also special and unique. So cheers to all the sunflowers, keep believing you are special and deserve all the best things in the world.
