In the 1940s, when bebop was the mainstream, everyone wanted to be Charlie Parker. Musicians tried to one up each other by playing faster and harder. Miles Davis took a seemingly awkward path. He went against the mainstream and played with cool, slow music – and thus "cool jazz" was born.

Marquis Hill, born in 1987, is also a passionate pioneer paving the way for new jazz. A highly anticipated and world-renowned trumpeter from Chicago, Marquis Hill has worked tirelessly to break down the barriers that divide musical genres. Contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul are all part of his African-American creative heritage. "It all comes from the same tree," he says. "They simply blossomed from different branches."

2014 seemed to have been Marquis Hill's "Jazz Year". It marks the year he won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition and became a presence on the global scenevirtually overnight. Playing with his band, the Blacktet, Hill received rave reviews from the New Yorker, "His performances and recordings reveal a smart post-bop player who circumvents genre clichés by incorporating elements of hip-hop and contemporary R. & B."

2月26日-3月10日，林肯爵士乐上海中心将迎来Marquis Hill为期2周的演出现场。首周主题是Hill的最新专辑：Modern flow volume 2。在这周演出中，你可以听到Hill将不同风格融合其中，用精湛的演奏技术重塑属于新一代的爵士乐标准。

From February 26th to March 10th, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai presents Marquis Hill featuring two running weeks of performances. The first week's performance, Modern flow volume 2, features his album, where Hill covers a broad range of styles and reinvents a new generation of jazz standard.

Sax: Braxton Cook

集萨克斯管，声乐，多乐器演奏于一身的爵士乐演奏艺术家Braxton Cook，在2017年刚刚发行了自己的首张专辑《Somewhere in Between》，曲风受John Coltrane，Charlie Parker等音乐家的影响。有4首曲目登陆Spotify的Top 50。Braxton也因此成为The Butter Playlist封面人物。

Saxophonist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Braxton Cook released his debut album "Somewhere in Between" in 2017. Heavily influenced by musicians such as John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, the album had 4 tracks that landed on Spotify's Top 50 Viral in the U.S. playlist. Braxton was also placed on the cover of The Butter Playlist.

Vibraphone: Joel Ross

三岁时就开始学习打击乐器的Joel Ross童年时期就“很不安分”。在2016年BIAMP PDX爵士音乐节的“爵士乐前锋”比赛中获得第一名，同时还是阿姆斯特丹“保球国际爵士奖”的获奖者。这回，Joel Ross将助力Marquis Hill的演出现场，担任颤音琴的角色。

Playing the percussion as early as three years of age, Ross was a very "precocious" child. Winning first place at the 2016 BIAMP PDX Jazz Festival 'Jazz Forward' Competition, he was also a winner of the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award, in Amsterdam. For this performance, Joel Ross will be on the Vibraphone.

Bass: Jeremiah Hunt

有丰富演出经验的Jeremiah Hunt，与许多国际乐队都曾演出合作过。目前居住在芝加哥的他，浸润在当地的音乐中，与Victor Goines，Bobby Broome，Pharez Whitted等人一起演奏爵士乐。并且与制作人Randy Jackson合作的过程中，发行了他的第一张专辑。

Jeremiah Hunt has a wide range of experience touring with many international bands. Currently a resident of Chicago, he is immersed in the local music scene and performs with many musicians including Victor Goines, Bobby Broome, and Pharez Whitted. His first album was released working alongside producer Randy Jackson.

Drums: Joe Dyson

Joe Dyson曾与艺术家Dr.Lonnie Smith, Sullivan Fortner，Ellis Marsalis等音乐家合作演出；参与制作的专辑超过28张。 除了巡回演出和录音之外，Joe还喜欢玩“客串”，他在HBO热播剧“TREME”也有露面。此外，你也可以在奥斯卡导演Jonathan Demme的电影配乐“Rachel Getting Married”中听到他的作品。

Joe Dyson has performed with artists such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Sullivan Fortner, and Ellis Marsalis; he has appeared in more than 28 albums. In addition to touring and recording, Joe has made appearances on the HBO hit series TREME, and can also be heard on the movie soundtrack Rachel Getting Married, by the Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme.
