Don McLean从少年时开始,便对摇滚乐无限痴迷,而当时摇滚乐的领军人物Buddy Holly更是他心中至高的偶像,Don也曾梦想着能像他一样,用摇滚乐为他人带来力量和希望。
可是天不遂人愿,1959年2月4日,当时还是一个送报员的少年Don,在他自己亲手递送的报纸上,读到了这则令他心碎的噩耗。Buddy Holly,以及同行的另两位摇滚巨星Ritchie Valens和J. P. Richardson (Big Bopper) 所搭乘的航班在依阿华州(Iowa)的Mason市郊外坠毁。
空难发生时,Buddy Holly刚结婚6个月,且妻子Maria Elena Holly已身怀六甲。更有悲剧色彩的是,Maria闻及噩耗后悲伤过度,导致孩子流产了。Don的对Rock and Roll的美好理想,这时可以说被击了个粉碎。灾难当天,在10年后,被Don定义为音乐死去的一天。

在这一部分,作者回忆起了往日的美好时光。<The Book of Love>以及<The Bible Tells Me So>都是50年代的经典曲目,它们代表了Don当年对于幸福这一抽象概念的理解。歌中提到的Sock Hop,是当时在美国学生中红极一时的舞曲。之所以叫Sock Hop,是由于出于保护地板的考虑,学生们会脱下鞋,穿着袜子舞蹈。诗句中的“你”,我相信是Don青涩年华时的梦中情人。10年后,那个她在此处,以及在歌曲的一些别的地方被蜻蜓点水般地提及。

在Don的眼中,Buddy Holly过世后的10年中,摇滚乐已迷失了自己的方向。在英语中有一句俗语是这样说的:A rolling stone gathers no moss. 它的意思是:滚石不生苔。作者在这里颇有所指地改变了这句谚语,因为他觉得滚石乐队把摇滚乐引入了歧途。
歌中提到的国王,无疑是指在当时红透半边天的摇滚乐之王,猫王Elvis Presley。而至于皇后,大家普遍认为是当年人气最旺的女歌手Connie Francis。献歌的小丑便是Bob Dylan。值得一提的是,在马丁.路德金(Marin Luther King)的那次历史性集会上,Bob Dylan也登台献艺,也算是sing for the King一句的双关义吧。甚至连我本人认为写完了这个世界上所有美妙乐曲的披头士(Beatles),也被他写成是扭曲了摇滚乐快乐的灵魂。

Helter Skelter,影射人物查尔斯·曼森,美国史上有名的“曼森家族”创始人,是一个超级杀人狂,1969年,曼森发动代号为“Helter Skelter”(取自披头士一首歌曲名字)的终极计划,造成美国史上最大杀人案之一。
这里,Don大规模地使用了比喻,橄榄球场是指当年的乐坛,而Sergeants固然是指Beatles(Beatles有一张经典专辑<Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band>)。就在大麻烟飘溢的那些年,Beatles势力逐渐壮大。Beatles使摇滚乐逐渐变得无法舞蹈,令Don苦恼不已。Players,也就是大多数的艺人们,甚至被压制得难以在演艺圈一露头角。在Don的眼中,这时的摇滚乐界已经病入膏肓,不禁怀念起有Holly的日子。
Chapter Five 嬉皮士之殇

在1969年,发生了两场至今仍然影响极为深远的音乐集会。一场是Woodstock音乐节,另一场说Altamont废弃高速公路音乐节。Woodstock的出现与当时的时代背景有很大关系,60年代中晚期,战后的思潮很激烈,年轻人有足够的见解却不被重视,挫折感与避世感顿生,他们渴望一种与世无争、和平、平等的世界,消除贫富差距、反建制,Woodstock应运而生,而它的超前成功又使青年人重拾信心,在Woodstock精神中加入一条积极上进的因素。
它也从此开启了嬉皮士文化的时代,被认为是改变摇滚乐历史的50个重要时刻之一;而12月6日由滚石乐队(The Rolling Stone)主导的Altamont音乐会,本欲如法炮制为西部的Woodstock盛典,最终由于暴乱以闹剧收场,对嬉皮士们乌托邦般理想的世界观造成了沉重打击。

本段中写到的转身而去的女孩,被大多数歌迷认为是Janis Joplin,她是当年最受欢迎的蓝调女歌手,令人惋惜的是,这位天才女歌手在27岁时(1970年)便离开了人世(成功加入了历史上非常有名的27岁俱乐部)。
在Don成长和成名的那个年代,各种思潮涌动,游行、暴动比比皆是,而痛苦的源泉便是为后世留下了无尽苦痛的越战。许多地方都由于反战示威引发了流血冲突。也就在那时左右,马丁路德金在种族冲突的前线牺牲了。
乱世之中,Don对摇滚乐未来的道路倍感迷茫。曾经如精神源泉和信仰般的音乐如今已被世事消磨殆尽。
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost是天主教教义中的三位一体(Catholic Trinity),三者合为上帝。Head for the west coast在过去有表达死去的意思。是哪三个人,在Don的心中如神一般,却又都死去了呢?多年来众说纷纭,可是除了Don本人,我们恐怕是永远无法得知了。
不得不说,《American Pie》是用音乐记录美国六十年代历史的一首史诗,没有春风得意的赞美,也没有针锋相对的批判,有的只是在轻快的民谣节奏中娓娓地道来——那里面有整整一个时代美国人所见、所思、所想,以及所经历的往事,而事实上正是这样不带主观评述的质朴歌声,最终打动了一代又一代的美国人,和热爱那个纯真年代的我们。
