Check out this list of events, which will turn your predicted to be boring weekend into an action packed one. Enjoy blasts from the past with music from different decades, both live and electronic. Sober up from your Saturday with either a stroll through a photo exhibition or a carb loaded invention, the Waggle, half bagel half waffle. 

 


Beat Bazaar at C’s Bar

DJ Akito at All

London-based DJ and producer Akito set the British club scene ablaze in 2014 with his Metamessage EP. His powerful tracks, highlighted with Grime have made him one of the most recognizable DJ’s in the business. In 2016 Akito’s record label Sans Absence was nominated for Best Breakthrough Label at DJ Mag’s annual Best of British Awards. Rip it up on the dance floor to his EP at the Shanghai club ALL. Ticket prices still have to be announced.

JZ Festival 2017

In it's 12 years, JZ Festival is back and bigger than ever. This year's theme is celebration and features headliners Kool and the Gang, known for their 1970's hit song, 'Celebration'. Other headliners include Andy Summers previously from the Police, Theo Crocker and Tia Ray, Jeff Lorber Fusion, Chris Dave and the Drumhedz and plenty more.

Horse Meat Disco began in a basement in London’s Chinatown, where co-founders James Hillard and Jim Stanton created a safe queer space for the disenfranchised disco citizens of London. Now reaching its fifteenth year, their parties evoke the halcyon days of New York nightlife and the collective’s events have been billed as “the queer party for everyone”. Musically, it’s a glittering disco behemoth of classics, italo disco, house, oddities, Afro,and punk funk, all combining to achieve Horse Meat Disco’s mission of dedicating itself to “the industry of human happiness”. Pre-sale tickets are RMB150  which include a welcome drink or RMB180 for tickets at the door. 

 


Swing Night at The Pearl

Ladies and gentlemen, The Pearl and the glamorous jazz band OLD SHANGHAI is back and invites you to a unique 1920’s swing night. This jazz quartet has a different and unique mix of modern rock and pop songs in a vintage style. Think of adaptations by Nirvana, Daft Punk, Katy Perry and Fergie, in addition to their own modern arrangements. Pre-sale tickets are RMB100 and RMB120 at the door.

 


Boom Bap: 1989 vs 1999 at C’s Bar

The year 1989 was when hip-hop really exploded in almost every sense with ground-breaking releases, conscious and gangsta rap, and incredible productions that weren't only James Brown samples. In comparison, 1999 saw the rise of the independent hip hop artist and the mainstream albums were gradually breaking away from the "Big Willy" generic rap on the radio. On Saturday, October 14th Boom Bap presents 1989 vs 1999, old school vs true school, but more interestingly the temporal battle with DJ Loke vs DJ Black Daniels. Join C's Bar for what should be one of the most original hip-hop parties to hit Shanghai in a while, as always done from the ground up.

 


Wonky Kong Anniversary with DJ Zinc

Celebrating 7 years of 'monkey-ing' around, Wonky Kong brings you one of the originators, DJ Zinc for a special "Trust Me I Was There" set, curating the biggest, most iconic soundtrack of the UK rave and jungle history.

 


YETI Presents: Yukibeb at Arkham

A Tokyo native and Soulection member, Yukibeb has only been churning out mixes since 2011 and amassed global attention for her eclectic selections. Following her strong intuition for unique remixes, she fuses hip hop, future beats and r&b sensibilities while reflecting the backdrop of Tokyo's underground sound. Part of L.A music collective Soulection, Yukibeb has worked alongside label mates such as Mr. Carmack, starRo, Jarreau Vandal, LAKIM to Esta with her "Soulection and Chill" mix garnering over 500k plays on Soundcloud.

‘We Are Shanghai’ is an annual pan-genre music compilation project, aiming to showcase the variety of music and talent in the Shanghai music scene. Each album is a time capsule of art and expression from one of the largest and diverse cities in Asia. Expect free merchandise, beer, tattoo vouchers, and other sweet giveaways from sponsors like Shanghai Tattoo, Inferno and Pistonhead. Free entry. 

 


Staged-A Street Photography Group Exhibition

In the age of selfies, ubiquitous commercials and photogenic touristic places around the city, is the street turning into a stage? And what does this mean for street photography today, a genre historically calling for pictures to be unstaged and spontaneous? These questions form the basis of this exhibition curated by HuArts, where street photography will be reflected on as a medium. Bringing together 13 artists working with strikingly different styles, the concept of spontaneity in street photography will be set as the challenge. Free entry. 

 


Spread the Waffle

Spread the Bagel and Mr. Waffle are teaming up for a carb-filled weekend event, bringing you the Waggle, a new Frankenfood. It's a bagel/waffle mash-up and they'll be selling a Waggle and a beer for RMB70 as the pre-sale deal this weekend. At the shop the Waggle will be from RMB55-70, a vedett Blond Lager for RMB30 and a Vedett IPA for RMB40.
