The BAFTAS took place on March 13th this year, and photographs from the event have been circulating online as fans rank their favourite outfits, red carpet moments, and award show moments.

A picture of Emma Watson has been making its way around Twitter, predominantly accompanied by hateful captions calling the actress “old.”

Fans of Watson jumped to her defence with many pointing out that it was just an unflattering picture, which happens to everybody. One person wrote:“Why would Emma Watson or anyone need Botox at only 31 years old? Bad lighting, shes wrinkling her forehead.”

However, others called out the unfair standards women face within the film industry. One person explained that it doesn’t make sense for Watson to look the same as she did when she was a teenager. They said:

One person put it simply, saying: “No. This is the difference between 21-year-old and 31-year-old woman. Aging starts to show. It’s normal.”、

HOLLYWOOD’S DOUBLE STANDARDS WITH AGE EXPLORED

Women in Hollywood have recently been outspoken of the double standard in Hollywood when it comes to ageing. Once they are no longer youthful, female actresses are often pushed out of the limelight and deemed “too old.”

好莱坞的女性最近直言不讳地表示，在衰老问题上，好莱坞确实存在双重标准。一旦不再年轻，女演员往往会被挤出聚光灯，并被认为“太老了”。

Meanwhile, male actors are allowed to age without criticism and instead are deemed ‘silver foxes’ as they age past 50.

Kyle Buchanan explored this in an article Vulture in 2013 where he said:“It seems time and time again, male movie stars are allowed to age into their forties, fifties and even sixties while the ages of their female love interests remain firmly on one side of the big 4-0.”

In 2015, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal explained that at just 37 she was considered too old to play the love interest of a 55-year-old actor, and that by her mid-30’s she was considered “over the hill” by the industry.
