EXT.ON THE STREET-DUST
Nancy stops in front of a homeless man on the street, who is
reading a newspaper.
NANCY
(depressingly)
Tell me, is life always hard?
STUART
Stuart closes up the newspaper.
Young lady, if you want to start a
conversation with a stranger, it's
a better choice to start it in a
polite way. And by the way, I'm not
tell-me, Tony or Tommy. I'm Stuart.
NANCY
Nancy bends down.
OK. Mr. Stuart, could you please do
me a favor and tell me is life
always this hard to everyone or
just to me?
STUART
Stuart lowers his head for a little while and rise up.
emmmm... Let me think. Got a bad
day? Broke up with boyfriend? Lost
job? Family member diagnosed with
cancer? Don’t know how to come out
with parents? Or...oh my god, are
you a HIV carrier?
NANCY
Fine, though I don’t like your way
of talking, I have to admit you
make me feel better. I lost my job
right after the internship. And due
to that, I can’t pay my apartment
rental and got driven out by my
landlord.
STUART
Ah, wait a minute.
Stuart turns around and speak to GRAY
Hey! Gray! How's everything going?
Gray walks away slowly.
GRAY
Nice day. Isn't it?
STUART
(low voice)
He can't see. Lost his eyes in
Vietnam War. Lives alone. Sometimes
he goes out for a walk at midnight
or ask me why it's so noisy outside
when it should be, you know, at
8o'clock in the morning.
NANCY
Oh...
MME.GREENWICH gets down her car.
MME.GREENWICH
Nice girl, Stuart!
NANCY
Oh! I am not his…
STUART
Many thanks~
Mme. Greenwich goes upstairs
STUART
Madame Greenwich maintains a fake
relationship with her husband. I
have seen her turn around and go
pretending nothing have happened
many times.
NANCY
But why she...?
STUART
Everyone has a story to tell.
NANCY
Then what's your story?
STUART
Just a homeless man.
Stuart stamps his foot and stands up.
Oh come on! It's nearly 8, RANDY is
going to practice performing for
his audition in the balcony. Trust
me, you don't want to listen to
that.
Stuart and Nancy hurries away.
EXT.ON THE STREET-EVENING
Randy(O.S)To be or not to be:that is the question
STUART&RANDY
(Stuart imitates Randy's
accent)
Whether'tis nobler in the mind to
suffer.
STUART
God! Why do people love Shakespeare
so much? I just don't get it.
Nancy and Stuart walk along the street.
NANCY
Is he a Spanish boy? That must be
hard for him to recite those long
ancient lines. That makes me kinda
envy him.
STUART
(laugh)
For what? Date with Shakespeare day
and night?
NANCY
(giggle)
No! I am just not sure if there's a
thing I'd like to spend all rest of
my life on. It seems I've lost my
passion for everything.
STUART
Too early to say that. Look at
Randy, he is surely a drama addict,
so that he put all himself into the
fictional roles. And those singers,
they sing because they enjoy the
feeling of having notes shake
through their bodies. We don't need
to find our goals deliberately. And
people who settle down in Iceland
after a world tour must have a
desire to those beautiful icy
mountains.
NANCY
Then why you are here?
STUART
To know the world.
EXIT.ON THE STREET-MIDNIGHT
Nancy and Stuart walk along the street and stop at a guitar
store.
STUART
Oh, my baby.
NANCY
Nancy points at a guitar on the wall.
Is that yours?
Nancy squints her eyes and stands on her tiptoes, trying to
figure out what’s sticking onto the guitar.
Those are...
STUART
They are stamps. I collected them
from cities around the world. Rome,
Paris, Katmandu, Damascus, Beijing
and some small towns I cannot name
out. Wanna have a close look?
NANCY
But how could we...?
STUART
Stuart looks for something in his pocket.
Then you need this, essential
living material for a homeless man!
He take out a stretch of iron wire.
Cover me, cover me!
Nancy turns around and observes whether there’s people
around.
STUART
Stuart opens the door.
There you go.
INT.IN A GUITAR SHOP-MIDNIGHT
Nancy and Stuart come into the room, draw back the curtain,
open the phone light, take down the guitar and sit down on
the ground.
NANCY
Beautiful sound. Then why you don’t
own it now?
STUART
I sold it, for money. To live is
more important than anything,
right? Wanna have a try?
NANCY
Yeah, sure.
Nancy takes over the guitar and starts to sing Seasons in
the Sun.
STUART
(surprisingly)
Wow, great taste.
NANCY
I used to be a guitar player in my
local band. Cut my hair as short as
it can never touch my neck. Having
an arm of tattoos. No schoolwork,
no books, no care of anyone’s word.
We redecorated an old drag boat as
a studio. There are times home party
invite us for entertainment. And
spent all the payment to update
equipment or just drunk them out.
It’s like a circle.
STUART
Then what changed you? I mean why
did you stop?
NANCY
My mom’s death. It’s not about pain
or keeping fancying she’s alive. It
feels like losing everything all of
a sudden. I couldn’t develop an
interest to anything ever since. So
now I’m following her trace.
Getting a stable job, arranging
things in advance, finishing them
on time and waiting for an answer.
STUART
Stuart points at the guitar.
Give me that. This is for you.
He plays the guitar and sing Lost Stars.
EXT.IN FRONT OF A CHAPEL-MIDNIGHT
NANCY
I have never been to a chapel at
the midnight.
STUART
I have done this a few times
before. You know, those nuns, they
are very willing to offer a place
to men like me in winter.
Stuart and Nancy walk into the chapel.
INT.IN A CHAPEL-MIDNIGHT
STUART
Stuart points the Madonna painted on the wall.
What do you think she is thinking
of?
NANCY
Well, maybe the reason why she is
pregnant of the God’s son.
STUART
No. She’s looking down. Maybe
considering the need to buy a pair
of new shoes the next day.
NANCY
Ouch.
STUART
Stuart turns around, shrugs and they two walk forwards.
I don’t believe in God. But I
believe the remorse and pains
people leave there are real.
Sometimes you can hear the remorse
and prays clearly.
NANCY
Yeah. We all need a place or
someone to pour our negative
thoughts onto. Or something
supports us when we are in pains.
They two sit down.
NANCY
This is the place where I first
knew what death is. It is said
people would die three times in
their life. The first is a
biological death, when the heart
doesn’t beat again, no more warm
air comes out from the nostril and
the body decomposes into dirt in
the end. And the second step is
when the doctor or the institutions
declare you are dead.Your bank
account will be frozen. And your
name will never be on a plane
ticket again. And finally, the last
person who knows you when you are
alive passes away. Then all the
trace you have on the earth gone,
like you have never lived.
STUART
But do you know? Based on your
theory, we won’t die physically. We
are all made up of molecule and
atoms, which can be found
everywhere in the universe. Even
the light your eyes are capturing
at the moment, it can be from a
particle millions of years ago in
the vicinity of the one composing
your right finger.Is that romantic?
No one will be really dead. We are
all becoming stars in the end.
The two keep silent, both absorbed in thought.
STUART
Stuart turns up his head.
Do you want to see our ancestors?
EXT.IN A PARK-NEARLY DAWN
They two run to a grassland covered with papers.
STUART
Here's my home. I live under the
stars. This is my pillow and
...quilt.
Stuart takes out an old baseball mitt and a few hard
cardboard boxes.
Yeah, these are sweet things to
keep you warm in though nights.
Nancy sits beside Stuart.
NANCY
Why there are so many holes on the
newspaper?
STUART
(laugh)
That’s for Randy. I cut all the
information about his homeland from
the newspaper and put them in his
mail box, in case he doesn’t know
what happens in his country.
NANCY
In case he feels lonely?
STUART
Yes, in case he feels lonely...
They two keep silent, look upwards to the stars.
NANCY
(murmuring)
To understand only what I was
predestined; I was, me, vain shadow
dark and taciturn.
NANCY&STUART
The mysterious King of the night
pump; That heaven for me alone was
lit up!
NANCY
Nancy turns to Stuart.
You know that poem?
STUART
Sure. And I also know the French
version.
(slowly recite)
Le roi mystérieux de la pompe
nocturne ; Que le ciel pour moi
seul s'était illuminé ! Picked up a
little French when hanging around
in Paris.
NANCY
Nancy gets up with her arm supporting her head.
Is there anything you don’t know?
STUART
I know everything.
Nancy leans down on her arms.
NANCY
Stuart, where do we come from?
STUART
From our moms.
NANCY
No, we are what we do. You sleep
under stars. You feel the wind. You
see small things. You know nature.
You are free. I want to be as free
as you. But life never gives me a
choice.
STUART
Then fight for one.
Nancy sighs, then remains silent.
STUART
You see the Triones over there? It
could be anyone. Your mom, your
grand-grandfather and maybe his
gorgeous neighbor. She might have
had a romantic story with him on
the senior prom, but they two broke
in the end. Otherwise, the world
will lose a girl who likes to
accost homeless man on the street
and hang out with him all the
night.
Nancy laughs.
STUART
Trust me, if your mom is watching
you right now. She would be happy.
Coz you are happy. You didn’t part
with her, you are carrying her. If
you want to do something, then go
for it. Just remember, whenever you
feel tired and lonely, look up to
the sky and look at those great
people.
The sun rises and stars start to fade.
STUART
They are with us, all along the
way.
Stuart stands up.
Goodbye Hugo! Goodbye Vincent!
Nancy stands up.
See ya Mandela! Bye Michael
Jackson! Bye Hawking!
NANCY
(turn around and laugh)
Oh god. He is still alive!
STUART
(Stuart makes a face and
winks)
I'm sorry.
NANCY
Bye Stanley Kubrick! Bye David
Bowie! And bye Stuart!
(Nancy turns around to Stuart)
I’m going to go. Thanks for your
treat, stories and lovely bed. See
you, maybe!
STUART
If I can’t see you again. Good
morning, good afternoon and good
evening.
EXT.IN FRONT OF NANCY’S APARTMENT.DAYS LATER-MORNING
Nancy is collecting her package and waiting for a taxi when
Stuart shows up suddenly. Nancy gets surprised.
STUART
Is me wearing a suit or knowing
where you live get you surprised?
NANCY
Neither. I was wondering where you
are going.
STUART
Where are you going?
NANCY
Hollywood. For an... audition.
STUART
Wow, young lady. What a
coincidence. We are going to the
same direction. Shall we?
Stuart reaches out his arm and Nancy steps out and holds
Stuart 's arm.
NANCY
Yeah, sure. Why not? How do we get
there?
STUART
On foot.
