Welcome to the Yale U.S.-China Forum

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2018 Yale U.S.-China Forum! The forum aims to provide a platform to exchange thoughts and ideology by helping participants understand the changing landscape, witness recent advancements and accomplishments, and foster ideas for future development and opportunities in China.

The theme of this year’s forum, The China Accelerator for World Development, comes at atime of China’s continuous effort of structural reform. In 2017, China has achieved a 6.9% increase in gross domestic product (GDP), continuing to provide a positive and healthy momentum for world development. In the meantime, to sustain quality in its growth, China strives to transition from foreign direct investment to domestic consumption, from manufacturing to innovation, and from economies of scale to quality improvement.

With panels on macro economy, urbanization, healthcare,  ntech, art and culture, and many other topics, our speakers and our audiences will together explore cooperative opportunities between U.S. and China and foster ideas for coordinated development across China’s economy, society, and culture. Our hope is that the insights and ideas discussed today will continue to evolve after our event concludes.

To our sponsors, speakers, student executive committee, volunteers, SOM staff, and many others who have contributed to make this day a reality, we thank you. Together, we can shape and establish more effective dialogs between U.S. and China.

Sincerely,

Your 2018 Forum Co-Presidents

前景展望及家族基金

Over the past decade, the number of high net worth individuals (“HNWIs”) in China has grown by 10 times to 1.87million, with combined investable assets of RMB58 trillion. At the same time, there has been an increased willingness to consult professional financial services providers, which creates tremendous opportunities for wealth managers and leads to the rapid growth of family offices. Although individual wealth management and family funds are still in their early stages in China, as the needs of HNWIs become more complex and diversified, it is important for market players to adapt to shifts in investment priorities, updates in domestic and international regulations, as well as changes in social and technological environments.

Industrial Panel

产业升级的“危”与“机”

China’s Reform and Opening-up has come to its 40th anniversary in 2018. For the past four decades, China has burgeoned from an farmer-based economy to a world-beating consumption-led powerhouse. The progress challenged the labor-intensive traditional manufacturers to transform to high-tech and highly productive industry leaders. However, the rapid industry transformation has also taken a toll on the environment. It is crucial for industry leaders and policymakers to think about sustainable growth while keeping the competitive position in the global market.

Our panelists, with rich experiences in renewable energy and leading the traditional manufacturer to success, will share their diverse perspectives on industry upgrading with the audience. We will also take a deeper dive into the challenges and opportunities industry leaders face, as well as how the US-China trade war impact industries in both countries.

Jing Tsu

Jing Tsu, a new Guggenheim Fellow, is a literary scholar and cultural historian of modern China at Yale University. She is the first person to be tenured and become Professor of Chinese Literature and Comparative Literature at Yale, and author of four books (two co-edited). She is currently writing a new book about how China entered the IT era, The Kingdom of Characters: Language Wars and China's Rise to Global Power, a remarkable tale that uncovers what happened to the Chinese script in the age of the Western alphabet (under contract with Riverhead at Penguin Random House). Her research spans literature, linguistics, science and technology, typewriting and digitalization, diaspora studies, migration, nationalism, and theories of globalization, and she has written for The New York Times. Her first book, Failure, Nationalism, and Literature: The Making of Modern Chinese Identity, 1895-1937 (Stanford University Press 2005), has been praised as a “bold,” “original,” “a provocative and innovative book that opens up new critical spaces,” and “a seriously good read.” Her second book, Sound and Script in Chinese Diaspora (Harvard University Press 2010), has been called “a truly groundbreaking work in Sinophone studies,” “an unusual, complex, and remarkable book,” “a captivating work of linguistic and literary scholarship,” and a “must-read.” It is currently being translated into Chinese. Crossing different fields and disciplines by making new connections between disparate contexts, Tsu has been widely recognized in Asia and the U.S. for her approach. She has received fellowships and honors from the Society of Fellows (Harvard), Woodrow Wilson Foundation, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (Harvard), and most recently the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton).
