Selena Gomez: The Girl Knows What She Wants

When it comes to Selena Gomez, an image of a girl with baby face must emerge in your mind immediately. Selena is an actress and singer who is the first to gain over 100 million fans over Instagram. However, she seldom surprised the music industry until her second studio album Revival (2015) came out.
Selena has been denied as a singer because of her poor and indistinctive vocal capacity for a long time. In addition, her music style was limited between teen pop and unpolished dance music. Thus, in most people’s mind, singing was her sideline just like a game. Comparing her with the other Disney pop princesses, the release of Bangerz (2013)makes Miley Cyrus grow into a wild mature woman. And Let it Go is a solid proof for Demi Lovato’s supreme vocal capacity. In 2014, Selena released a R&B single The Heart Wants What It Wants, which is the lead single of her best album to complete her recording obligations with her former record label. Recognized as her turning point for her music career, this song witnesses her determination to evolve. Later, she officially announced her change in labels and revealed Revival’s coming, stating ‘I’m excited to put most of my heart and soul into the next chapter of music.’
Good For You feat. A$AP Rocky first removes the veil of Revival. After its release, the single climbed among the top five of American Billboard Chart at a rapid speed, becoming her highest charting single. This time, Selena seems to be on the right track. Collaborating with rap singer A$AP Rocky, Selena makes Good For You on the basis of R&B with a mysterious and exotic house style added. It is really dangerous for singers to choose a slow-tempo song as the lead single. But it is just the resolution for Selena to change. Naturally, the song succeeds in both critics and commercial performance. After 2 months, the second single Same Old Love is available. Composed by English singer Charlie XCX, the song is surely made into a retro style. With a catchy melody, the song is so brainwashing to become her another top 10 single. In the music video, Selena starred as an LA woman to search for old typical love just as the title of the song suggested.
Kill’ Em With Kindness is a reflection of the theme’revival’. This song is described as a dance, club-anthem with a tropical house style. In the meantime, bells and whistles can be heard throughout the whole song, making the song witty and sexy. Apart from the musical elements, the lyrics exactly reflect the way in which Selena deal with the world. Owning over 100 million followers on the social software, Selena becomes a controversy individual on the Internet. Praise and admiration exist. But so does Internet bully. As the lyrics goes, instead of raising the middle finger or saying some mean words to the haters, we should take the high road and kill them with the kindness. As for ballad in this album, Camouflage is a highlight. Without complicated instruments, Selena sings only against the pure piano melody, which makes the song more genuine.
The whole album is on the basis of house style, which is a heaven-match with Selena’s vocal. And finally, she makes music into her career instead of a game. Although this album features complex genres, it deals with the theme of ‘revival’ from the first song to the end, making the whole album unified. And she once mentioned, she was influenced by Christina Aguilera‘s Stripped (2011)and that was the reason why she appeared naked on the cover to show her sincerity. Naked but fearless, she changed herself from a girl to a woman. And we can also sense her music ambition in Revival. Now the girl knows what she want. That is music.
