For the first time in decades, this year’s line-up of Nobel prizes does not feature a literature award after a rape scandal saw a string of members resign or withdraw from the Academy’s work in protest, leaving it unable to decide on a winner.

The Swedish Academy named two new members on Friday as part of efforts to rebuild the scandal-hit institution and ensure it can return to its function of selecting the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Academy said in a statement it had appointed Eric Runesson, a Swedish supreme court judge, and Iranian-born novelist and poet Jila Mossaed as new members.

The man at the center of a sex abuse and financial crimes scandal in Sweden that is tarnishing the academy that awards the Nobel Prize in Literature was convicted of rape and sentenced Monday to two years in prison.

① tarnish [ˈtɑ:nɪʃ] v.

The mirrors had tarnished with age.

Jean-Claude Arnault, a French photographer, was long seen in Sweden as someone who could make or break a career in the arts. He and his wife, a member of the Swedish Academy, owned the Forum, a popular cultural venue that received support from the academy.

② venue [ˈvenju:] n.

In November last year, the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter reported that 18 women had accused Mr. Arnault of sexual assault or harassment. Many said they had been mistreated at the Forum or at academy-owned properties in Stockholm and Paris. The accusations covered a period of 20 years; in many cases, too much time had passed for criminal charges to be considered under Swedish law.

③ assault [əˈsɔ:lt] n.

A significant number of indecent assaults on women go unreported.

harassment ['hærəsmənt] n.

Another survey found that 51 per cent of women had experienced some form of sexual harassment in their working lives.

But days after the story was published, a woman went to the police to accuse Arnault of raping her twice in 2011. Once, she said, Arnault forced her to perform oral sex, grabbing her neck so she couldn’t move. Another time, she said, he raped her as she slept.

The woman, a writer and academic whose name has not been released publicly, said she did not come forward earlier because Arnault was friends with her boss, and she feared for her professional livelihood.

After an investigation, Arnault was charged with two counts of rape. And on Monday, after a three-day trial, a Swedish court found him guilty. He was sentenced to two years in prison, the minimum required under Swedish law.

The victim’s lawyer, Elisabeth Massi Fritz, said Monday’s verdict was important both for her client and for the #MeToo movement.

⑤ verdict [ˈvɜ:dɪkt] n.

The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict.

“(It was) a big relief for my client, who today believes in justice,” she said. “No rape victims should be silent, no rape victims should feel guilt or shame.”

Arnault has denied the charges, calling the proceedings a “witch hunt” and has said he will appeal his conviction.

"My client will appeal the verdict, because he is not guilty of that crime." Bjorn Hurtig, Arnault’s lawyer said.

"The court's responsibility in a criminal case is to decide whether the prosecutor has proven the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. The evidence in this case has mainly consisted of statements made during the trial by the injured party and several witnesses." Gudrun Antemar, presiding judge said in a written statement.

Swedish Academy, which has long prided itself on its top-secret selection process, was caught up in further controversy when a paper reported Arnault had allegedly leaked the names of the literature prize winners seven times, including 2016 laureate Bob Dylan.

The Academy’s handling of the row prompted two of its 18 members to resign and several others to cease taking part in the Academy’s work.

⑥ cease [si:s] v.

Welfare payments cease as soon as an individual starts a job.

The head of the Nobel Foundation said last week it could drop the Academy from awarding the literature prize if it did not make further changes in the wake of the scandal.
