主题酒店的推出在国外已有50多年的历史。世界上最早的主题酒店兴起于1958年加利福尼亚的MadonnaInn，首先推出12间主题客房，随后发展到109间，成为当时最早、最具代表性的主题酒店，展在美国拉斯维加斯，统计，世界最大的16家主题酒店中，拉斯维加斯就有15家，主题酒店是拉斯维加斯酒店业的灵魂和生命。

在国外，主题酒店仅仅是独特概念酒店(UniqueConcept Hotels)中的一种。独特概念酒店主要包括主题酒店(Themed Hotel)、设计酒店(Design Hotel)、生活方式酒店(LifestyleHotel)、精品酒店(Boutique Hotel)、联合品牌酒店(Co-Branded Hotel)、优质服务酒店(Service Quality Hotel)。

The Inn wascreated by Alex Madonna, a successful construction magnate and entrepreneur (d.April 2004), and his wife Phyllis.The well-known motor inn, which includesa restaurant and bakery, is prominently located on the west side of US Route101 and situated on the lower eastern portion of Cerro San Luis Obispo.

Theproperty is adorned with a pseudo-Swiss-Alps exterior and lavish common roomsaccented by pink roses, Western murals, and hammered copper. Each of the 110guest rooms and suites is uniquely designed and themed, though some touristsstop just to peek at the famous rock waterfall urinal located in the men'srestroom, a feature designed by Hollywood set designer Harvey Allen Warren.

• Demand was sufficient to expand to forty rooms in 1959, andthe Inn facility was constructed in 1960.

Aiming to caterto a range of tastes, rooms were given unusual names such as the Yahoo, LoveNest, Old Mill, Kona Rock, Irish Hills, Cloud Nine, Just Heaven, Hearts &Flowers, Rock Bottom, Austrian Suite, Cabin Still, Old World Suite, CavemanRoom, Elegance, Daisy Mae, Safari Room, Highway Suite, Jungle Rock, AmericanHome, Bridal Falls and the Carin. Some rooms are grouped in themes. Forexample, the rooms, "Ren", "Dez, and "Vous" are a playon the French word, rendezvous, and "Merry", "Go", and"Round", for an amusement park carousel.
