Violynne Wang is a master student in Dept. of Computer Science, Tsinghua University. She is under the tutelage of the famous scholar Shi Yuancun, and doing work at the Pervasive Human-Computer Interaction Group. The results of her research have been received at the highest levels of business and academia: she has been invited to Alibaba’s Singles Day Tech Expo, the Asian University Alliance’s AI Achievement Exhibition. She also does work for charities such as the Beijing Volunteer Service Foundation and the China Braille Library, and is the organizer for Tsinghua University’s charitable activities for the visually-impaired.
Among the AI research teams around the globe working hard to change our daily lives, one team in particular stands out. The Tsinghua University Information Accessibility Team that Violynne Wang works with focuses on improving the digital experience for more than 17 million visually-impaired people in China.
We take for granted a lot of the benefits that come along with the ability to see, especially in the Digital Age. Visually-impaired people are in fact becoming more isolated – not more connected – in a world dominated by smartphones and those who can use them.
Brainstorm
To fix this problem, Violynne and her team conducted a series of investigations focusing on the needs of the visually-impaired. They conducted 188 user-experience programs, taking 300 hours altogether, the results of which are being applied to improve the user experience for the visually-impaired.
What if ears could press keys on a smartphone, Braille buttons could help navigate Taobao and probability theory could make typing more accurate?
Ideas like these are making people take notice. Violynne’s team has been invited to share their research with all kinds of organizations – from businesses like Alibaba, to charities such as China Association of Persons with Visual Disabilities – with the common goal of making life a bit brighter for those who were born not to see light.
Violynne has opened the door for the visually-impaired, not to walk behind us but rather proudly stride beside us as we enter the digital arena.
We welcome her to share her experience and research at TEDxTHU.
