CURATORS' WORDS

Eight Years, Half Written

To say the word "persistence" easily often dissolves the fun of doing one thing.

Rather than holding up, it’s probably better to say we are not getting bored yet, which sounds more enjoyable and relaxed.

The part that jazz fascinates us is its vigorous instinct and the infinite rebellion in its gene; any form of retro or insistence on the so-called "original" is doomed to failure: it is precisely the relatively dangerous and unstable relationship between composition and improvisation that builds its great magic.

through various means, would make a difference and react to these music from all around the world, and thus to affect them and those who are listening to them. Let the free thoughts and artistic spirit that jazz represents flow into your heart naturally and effort-lessly without any pretense. "Make the festival a piece of your own work" - this is nothing but our wildest ambition.

Open scenes, open art, open hearts and minds... All the spiritual powers are gather-ing here. And we are looking forward to creating this ensemble with you.

Eight years, half written. All is ready, except for you.

"AVA Trio is doing something musically, that no one else is up to. The Netherlands based group has done a masterful job of blending regional influences as well as balancing ethnic inspirations with free improvisation…”

AVA Trio is to create a music that is liberated from ethnic, geographical, and racial constraints, as well as political agendas. They are looking for an archaic way of unifying people through the earliest form of communication known to mankind: the organization of sounds, in other words, music.

“What is remarkable, is that the old musical tradition, Radiohead and a standard of Duke Ellington coexist in parallel without any conflict, as if all this was made by one and only man.”

EYM Trio experimented on stage many esthetics, many ways of being connected, to find their own identity. Quickly, they created a strong repertoire including personal compositions, covers and creations inspired by ethnic influences of jazz with colors from North Africa, Bulgaria, Romania, and India.

As Israelis, the band-members of Hagiga Sextet draw on a heritage of confluence and intersection. Mirroring their nation's geography, Hagiga's sound is at the intersection of north African aesthetics, European jazz, and a distinctly Asian approach to improvisation. "No other way to put it: the Hagiga Sextet is a fantastic find… Hagiga has developed a tasteful interplay while melding disparate musical traditions from around the world.”

Artists
Clarinet

Percussions

——Mike Wolf,

"Virginia Genta is a wee lass who handles her sax like Zeus does lightning. Her partner David Vanzan is a lanky basher of things, unleashing flowing rolls and bursts with more of a rock provenance than you normally get with fire music. They fully inhabit the '60s free-jazz aesthetic by blasting it into the present. Intrinsic to the spirit of their music is that there is room for more."

- Mike Wolf, Village Voice NYC

It was a month-long residency in West Berlin, From June 17 to July 17, 1988, which afforded Cecil Taylor time to perform in all of his guises - as a solo visionary, as a telepathic improviser playing next to a wide variety of top-shelf duo partners, and also as a big-band and orchestra leader. Artists who gave performances there included Han Bennink, Dreke Bailey, Evan Parker, William Parker, Günter Sommer, Louis Moholo, Peter Brötzmann and many more.

Erzulie Maketh Scent, Cecil Taylor’s solo piano performance recorded on July 16, 1988 at the Kongresshalle Berlin, is the closing disc of Cecil Taylor In Berlin '88, a monumental achievement consisting of 11 CDs and a 187-page booklet with numerous photographs from the various concerts and various analyses of the music, produced in a limited edition of 1000 copies world-wide and released by German free jazz label FMP in 1989. Cecil Taylor In Berlin '88 is maybe the most impressive documentation of the work of a single musician at one particular point in time, in Jazz.

Artists

Bass

Mamer uses his electric bass to turn reality into a kaleidoscope – out of focus, fragmented but magical. Behind the wall of the mottled and ever-changing sounds, there is starlight shining upon and desert stretching beneath. Even if your consciousness were brought to Kazakh grasslands for a brief stay, it would be nothing but a mirage. Call it “beautiful noise” or “violent tenderness”, every single note he plays comes out with its own objection, projecting a anomalously captivating world of mystery.

Axel Zajac - 吉他 Guitar

Jo Beyer – 鼓 Drums

“What Malstrom is doing is beyond any stylistic classification: it is a heavy-metal-hardrock-freejazz-experiment under high voltage, a sudatory sensory rush and an excessive play with the elemental force of music.”

Malstrom is a young trio from Germany which was formed 2013. The connection between improvisation and a “jazz background” with modern influences from metal, rock, drum 'n' bass as wells electronic music creates their specific sounds and makes it possible to get in contact with audience not only from jazz but from other genre as well.

Guillaume Nuss – 长号 Trombone

Imagine John Coltrane invited as a guest by Rage Against The Machine, Maceo Parker jamming with Radiohead, or Billy Cobham sitting-in with the best New Orleans brass bands… One foot in the liberty of jazz, the other in electro’s trance, both hands covered in greasy rock - that is  OZMA.

Ukulele

Vocals

Benny Brydern - 小提琴 Violin

Tim Gill – 短号 Cornet

With her sleek bob haircut (usually with a flower placed just so), vintage fashion sense, strikingly beautiful looks and artfully customized ukulele, Janet Klein might seem at first to be a simple novelty act, a 21st-century hipster "ironically" recreating the subtly naughty looks of a fin-de-siecle French postcard. Then she opens her mouth to sing and play her ukulele. Bearing an ever expanding repertoire of, as she puts it, "obscure, lovely and naughty songs from the 1910's, 20's and 30's," Janet Klein is a musical archeologist hiding in the body of an F. Scott Fitzgerald heroine.

Drums

“Saito could be Japan’s answer to Nick Cave - a man who like the city itself seems to have so much more going on beneath the surface layer, yet chooses to exercise restraint and respects his own art enough to let it do the talking for him.”

GLDN is an alternative rock/blues rock band based in Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan. The band borrows from the tortured soul of the slave music of the American rural south and gives it form as a new urban nightmare - a beast born of blocks of skyscrapers where there are no secrets. The voice of guitarist Kota Saito is like acrid secondhand smoke, and their songs are always about unforgettable stories, with a touch of melancholy.

“Koleva is the best thing we’ve had from Eastern Europe lately.” - Robert Elms, BBC

“Ruth’s voice is so emotional, you want to hear more.” - Lianne La Havas

“Wondrous combination of Space-Funk and Pop-Soul.” - EARMILK

Ruth Koleva is a Bulgarian soul/jazz singer. For Ruth Koleva, music isn’t just a hobby, it’s her way of life. Her one-of-a-kind voice has brought her into duet performances, on-stage with Bobby McFerrin, and dub legend Mad Professor, who admits to being fascinated by her ability to experiment fluidly with several musical idioms at only 17 years of age.
