NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island(Te Ika-a-Māui), and the South Island(Te Waipounamu)– and numerous smaller islands.Due to its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life.New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.

This time, we are lucky to interview a brilliant foreign teacher in our school – Jessica who brings us to her hometown, New Zealand.

Jessica was on the top of Mt. maunganiu in New Zealand on her last Christmas.
Jessica describes New Zealand with 3 words--  “natural , beautiful, clean”. And it’s really worth visiting New Zealand for everyone.

About Education

Primary and secondary schooling is

compulsory for children aged 6 to 16, with

the majority attending from the age of 5.

There are 13 school years and attending state (public)

schools is free to New Zealand citizens and

permanent residents from a person's 5th

birthday to the end of the calendar year

following their 19th birthday.

New Zealand has an adult literacy rate of

99 percent, and over half of the population

aged 15 to 29 hold   a tertiary qualification.

The OECD's Programme for International

 Student Assessment ranks New Zealand's

education system as the 7th best in the

world, with students performing exceptionally well in reading, mathematics and science.

The University of Au-

ckland, which is the

largest and highest

ranked university in

the country.

Q1: After working as a teacher in China for some time, what do you consider as the most obvious difference between Chinese education and New Zealand’s?
Jessica:
I thought in China the classes are much smaller and structured. In my university, the biggest class may be like one or two thousand students at one area. Professors will teach classes, do lectures and quite often, those lectures will be online, so students can go and see the lecture online. Also, students can choose what they study.  Therefore, students change classes and classmates most of the time.
We also do critical thinking, which is required at a university. Most students will do this in their first year and when it comes to writing an essay, they will use this approach a lot. In their essays and in class discussion they are encouraged to debate and have different ideas and to challenge their teachers. Sometimes it is fun but sometimes it is very stressful.
Q2: In China, many graduates are faced with a lot of pressure and stress from seeking jobs, is it the same in New Zealand?
Jessica:
I don’t think there is, because most people by the time they graduate have already been working for a few years. Most people would have at least two years of working experience. For example, I work in a core center for an alcohol company. When I graduated from university I went to work the same company but full time.
They don’t have the same pressure to find a job as Chinese students. So a lot of people sometimes will go traveling and work overseas.
About Travel and Food
New Zealand consists of 3 islands which are North Island, South Island and Stewart island. Almost 75 percent of people live in North island. There are lots of people and you can do lots of activities on it. Moreover, it has a very nice weather in summer. The sun will come up at 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

People will have meal outside their houses. Fish and Chips will be their first choice. As for tourists, they will usually buy a green stone or a jade as a souvenir. Oh, and there is a thing. Where do you guys think kiwi is from? New Zealan? Uh NO! Actually, it’s from China.
Q1: Which places will you recommend to us, if we plan to have a trip in New Zealand? Which part of your homeland do you like best?
Jessica:
You can travel the country around 10 days or 2 weeks. Most of people will hire a car or van, then drive around the country since the distance between cities are so short. ①Auckland(You can spend 2or3day in this city)—— ② Rotorua (Hells Gate Geothermal Park and Mud Bath Spa. It’s very interesting to see, because is all natural. And there are beautiful lakes and luge activities.)——③Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.(It’s a very cultural city. There are lots of mixed people. —— ④ South island, especially if you like natural places.(glacier climbing, bungee jumping and camping).
My favorite place in New Zealand  is Hot Water Beach. On this beach you can dig up the sand, and water will come in then you will have your own pool and it’s all free.
Q2: Pavlova is one of the most famous dessert in New Zealand, how does it taste like? And what’s your favorite food in New Zealand?
Jessica:
Pavlova tastes sweet and it’s very light. It will disappear to nothing in your mouth. It’s usually topped with kiwi and strawberry. That’s my favorite cake. It’s very cheap to buy so people will usually buy it since it’s a little difficult to make at home. And my favorite meal in New Zealand is Fish and Chips. It tastes a little bit different from English one. And I love It so much.
About Culture and Life
New Zealand music has been influenced by blues, jazz, country, rock&roll and hip hop, with many of these genres given a unique New Zealand interpretation. Māori developed traditional chants and songs from their ancient South.The country's diverse scenery,compact size,plus government incentives, have encouraged some producers to film big budget movies in New Zealand, including The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia and King Kong. Additionally, Jessica recommend us a pop singer: Lorde.

Culture about Māori: Early Māori adapted the tropically based east Polynesian culture in line with the challenges associated with a larger and more diverse environment, eventually developing their own distinctive culture.
Q1:How much do you know about the Maoris? What social position they are in?Is there any discrimination about them?
Jessica:
In the New Zealand, the Maoris is local people. When the British people came about 200 years ago, a lot of them died because of the disaster. They still live on island which is far away from New Zealand but it is still part of New Zealand. Because so many Maoris is lack of money and education, they may stole things.
Q2:When you first went to China, did you experience the cultural shock? What's the biggest different between Chinese college students life style and New Zealand's?
Jessica:
I think in Xiamen, some people will have a nap at 12am~2p.m. Stores , Cafe and office will close at 12am.~2p.m. So I can’t speak to my boss since they all have to sleep. And it’s hard to top up my ID card. That would not happen in my country. People will start their work at 9a.m and they would not have a nap. You can always see them in office. I think the biggest different would be the food because it is really different.
