去过英国的小伙伴应该不难发现，英国是个极爱阅读的国家，伦敦现有395个公共图书馆，每个公共图书馆又包括若干个分馆，使得图书馆遍布全城。为了推动社会阅读和建设学术性社区，英国的图书馆行业从2010年开始，每年向市民推荐50本好书，而且推荐的力度很大。除了在各个图书馆的新书介绍架上介绍外，更多地是通过电视节目的著名主持人、BBC伦敦台以及报纸杂志等进行介绍。
此外，英国人利用公交出行时来阅读已成为根深蒂固的习惯，在飞机、火车、地铁、巴士上，手不释卷的身影比比皆是。所以如果你如果计划去英国读书，第一课，你得学会阅读并热爱阅读。
某公学招生官给学生传授顶尖公学的考试秘籍，那就是Reading！Reading！Reading！通常在面试时，招生官最喜欢问到的问题也是“你能告诉我最近你正在读哪本书吗？”可见，阅读不仅仅是提高英语词汇量和运用能力的有效途径，还是与人交流的话题谈资。

看到这么长的阅读书单是否已经眼花缭乱，这只是我从中摘取的一小部分。见到很多的同学在准备出国留学前的一两年甚至几个月想快速强训英语能力，但罗马不是一天建成的，英语能力也绝不是几个月能快速习得的。随着中国申请者的数量快速增长，和有越来越多优秀的申请者的加入低龄留学大军，英国顶尖的公学绝不是只要数学和理科好的中国学生，好的英文能力是PK掉其他竞争者的关键。学校在众多优秀的申请者中挑选更佳优秀的学生，要求海外学生达到英语母语的能力也完全不过分了。
