Shanghai bar Speak Low has been named as one of the top 10 bars in the world this year.
Announced in London on October 5, the four-story speakeasy on Middle Fuxing Road came in at number 10 on The World's 50 Best Bars 2017 awards, up from 15 last year and leaping from 60 since it debuted on the list in 2015.
Speak Low was co-founded by Japanese bartender Shingo Gokan, who was named the International Bartender of the Year at this year's Spirited Awards, an industry recognition that's like the Oscars for bartenders, and was also the global winner of the Bacardi Legacy cocktail competition in 2012. Additionally, bar manager Atsushi Suzuki was named the world champion at this year's Chivas Masters cocktail competition.
Joining Speak Low on this year's World's 50 Best Bars list is Union Trading Company, which debuted at 97 on the ranking's 51 to 100 spots. The first place went to The American Bar at the Savoy Hotel in London.
