Strange things about Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova's relationship
Stassi Reid
One of Hollywood's best-kept secrets is all the juicy details surrounding Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova's relationship. The couple reportedly met in 2001 on the music video set for his song, "Escape." What followed next is a bit murky, to say the least. Are they together? Did they break up? Did they get married? Are they divorced? These are just a few of the questions that arise when people think of this ultra-covert couple.
Iglesias continues to tour and remain in the spotlight as a mega-successful Spanish singer. But when it comes to his private life, he and Kournikova are rarely spotted out in public together. As mysterious as they are about their romance, we weren't the least bit shocked when we learned the former professional tennis player hid her pregnancy for 9 months, according to TMZ, only to reemerge on Instagram with a bangin' post-pregnancy body and two bundles of joy, twins Nicholas and Lucy.
We have to hand it to the musician and the former athlete for having one of the most low-key romances known to mankind, but that doesn't mean we don't notice all the strange things about their relationship, too.
Nice to meet you, here's a kiss
Even though Anna Kournikova never won a tennis singles title, she became a hot commodity in the sports world and beyond during the early-2000s. Companies clamored to snag her for endorsement deals, according to MTV, and she was even asked to be Iglesias' leading lady in 2001 in the music video for his chart-topping track, "Escape."
During that fated first meeting, the treatment for the video required the couple to make their way inside a restroom. Then, Kournikova ends up being propped on a counter, followed by a steamy make-out session with Iglesias. Ooh la la.
Looking back on the video, it's obvious the pair had some major chemistry on set, and sparks were legit flying all over the place. We find it sweet their first meeting was captured on film for them to look back on for a lifetime, but perhaps they'll want to hide the salacious footage from their kiddos. That would be beyond awkward for them to watch!
On another note, knowing how secretive they are about their relationship, it's super ironic that anyone can head over to YouTube and get a glimpse of their very first kiss in action, don't you think?

How much more private can they get?
When he's not on tour, Enrique Iglesias likes to unwind just like us normal folk. "A day off for me is being at home on the sofa, watching TV with my girlfriend and our two pets — just having a good time," the singer told Ventaneando (via E! News).
If we owned a piece of real estate like Iglesias and Kournikova's, we would stay cooped up inside all day, too! The couple splurged on a 20,000-square foot dream home in Miami's Millionaire Row in 2013, according to the Daily Mail. The Iglesias-Kournikova pad is situated in the private, waterfront community, and the palatial estate includes a tennis court for Kournikova to play the game she loves the most. There's also a private dock where they can keep their boat when they're not out hitting the waves.
You would think that living in the exclusive, ultra-ritzy neighborhood would provide the couple with the type of privacy they crave. But after the birth of their twins in 2017, they went to great lengths to quarantine themselves even further. TMZ reported they were in the process of building a huge 16-foot-tall wall to surround their entire residence. Jeez. How much privacy do they really need?
He's the male version of her
During an interview with Loose Women, the former The Biggest Loser trainer flashed a mega-sparkler on her ring finger. Naturally, the hosts assumed Anna Kournikova was set to marry her long-time partner, but when she was asked whether she was engaged, she gave a rather convoluted response. "Well, we've been together for over eight years," Kournikova said. "So you have to have that trust with each other. You know, it's not easy being together for so long, but I kind of understand him a lot because he's the male version of me and I'm kind of the female version of him."
Say what?! How did we go from talking about her proposal to the Latin star being the male version of her? Someone, por favor, make it make sense!
We've grown accustomed to the roundabout way this strange couple answers questions as they pertain to their relationship. We just hope one day they'll let the cat out the bag and come clean with all the deets!

A video director bucked her no-kissing clause
Enrique Iglesias attended the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards and he had a leggy blonde beauty by his side. The woman was none other than Anna Kournikova, of course. She sported a crop top and a pair of white jeans and looked absolutely chill and relaxed in her casual attire. She was also sporting something else that couldn't be missed: a cheesy grin on her face. Love was definitely in the air!
At an after party that same night, video director Dave Meyers, the man behind the music video for "Escape," spoke to the New York Times about the industry's hottest "it couple."
”I got [Iglesias and Kournikova] together,” he told the publication. ”Enrique liked Anna and wanted her in his video. So I wrote in a scene that made them kiss even though she had a no-kissing clause in her contract.” Yikes.
Everything worked out in the end, but Meyer's sneaky plan to get the pair to lock lips is a bit on the skeevy side, if you ask us.
An engagement ring with no desire to get married?
In an interview with People, Anna Kournikova said she was forced to put her career on hold after a debilitating back injury. But the Russian tennis starlet still attempts to remain as active as possible. She frequently shares videos of her workout routine on Instagram, and she even participated in the First Annual Nautica South Beach Triathlon.
People magazine caught up with her at the race and asked for her thoughts about fellow tennis star Andy Roddick's then-engagement to model Brooklyn Decker. "They're really young, but I hope it works out," Kournikova said. Well, that sounded a bit cynical, huh?
Unsurprisingly, she was asked when she and Iglesias would walk down the aisle. She answered defiantly, "I'm never getting married," before adding, "Everything is good."
Despite her reluctance to get hitched, Kournikova hasn't been opposed to wearing massive engagement rings on and off the court, which is super strange for someone who poo-pooed the idea of marriage.

He's not a huge fan of marriage either
During a concert in Russia, Enrique Iglesias reportedly introduced Anna Kournikova to the crowd as his wife. When Parade magazine told him he had some explaining to do — surprise, surprise — he skirted the question. "It was just meant to be sweet in the moment. I honestly didn't mean to confuse people. I thought it'd be easier for the audience to understand than if I said 'my girl.'" he said. Yeah, sure.
He was then asked if wedding bells would be ringing for them any time soon, and the "Bailando" superstar answered, "I've never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it's because I come from divorced parents, but I don't think you love someone more because of a piece of paper."
Hmm…maybe this is where Kournikova's aversion to marriage stems from. But as long as they're on the same page about refraining from tying the knot, then more power to them.
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Enrique Iglesias one told a KISS FM 103.5 radio host that he had broken up with Anna Kournikova. And when he returned to the same station for a follow-up interview, the host began to badger him about his love life, insisting he come clean about whether or not he was in a new relationship. You can probably imagine how shocked the host was when Iglesias revealed he and Kournikova had gotten back together — because they had never even broken up in the first place!
"Oh, I was bulls******g you," the "Hero" singer jokingly told the host about his initial breakup confession. "I just wanted you to play my record so I thought I could actually, you know, I though we could go on a date, and I said, 'Maybe she'll put me in high rotation if we go out.'" Um, how shady is that?!
Misleading the public and lying about his relationship status seems to be Iglesias' forte, but joking about the woman who means so much to him seems a bit strange to us. And, if we were Kournikova, we'd be a bit peeved, too. Toying with the press is one thing, but denying your partner just for kicks is a no-no.

Anna who?!
Following news of her surprise pregnancy and birth of twins in December 2017, an insider close to the couple told People magazine how they managed to keep everything on the hush-hush. "They basically only hang out with family and very close friends," the source said. "They mostly keep to themselves."
If that's truly the case, it makes the interview Enrique Iglesias' father, fellow Latin crooner Julio Iglesias (pictured), gave to the Mirror ten times more wacky. "You know I have to tell the truth, I have never met Anna," Julio told the website. "Yes, my wife, and my kids and his brothers have, but I have never met her, no, no, never."
At the time of that interview, the couple had already hit the 12-year mark. Yes, 12 whole years sans a simple meet and greet between Julio and Anna!
Papa Julio himself was even perplexed as to why he was being shunned from his son's love life, but he did put some of the blame on his son's schedule. "My kids are very independent and it is difficult to see Enrique because he is all over the world. But Anna is very beautiful — they have good taste my kids," he said.
We want to believe him, but considering Enrique and his father were both residents of Miami at the time, according to Berg Properties, we have to call BS.
This is all so strange. Really, really strange.
More fibs from the 'Mentiroso'
No wonder the Spanish heartthrob has a song entitled, "Mentiroso." Translated to English, it means "liar," and that's what Enrique Iglesias has proven himself to be — or so we think?
He spoke to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet (via People magazine) in May 2007 and said he and Anna Kournikova had secretly tied the knot, but things didn't work out. "We're divorced," he said. "I am single now, but that's okay … I don't mind be
It seemed that even Kournikova believed he had gone too far because her rep released a statement to the publication, saying the duo was "still together," which is pretty noteworthy in itself. For someone in their camp to actually acknowledge that a relationship between these two even exist is M-A-J-O-R!
And it wouldn't be the first time the "Tu y Yo" crooner would be less than truthful about his marital status. During a stop in Los Angeles for his 2014 tour, he told Univision (via Huffington Post): "I got a divorce three days ago and I wanted to give you guys the exclusive. I'm serious. No, seriously. Don't laugh."
At this point, legal proof that he and Kournikova are husband and wife has never been uncovered. However, on the off chance that they are indeed married, we hope all of this strange talk about divorce doesn't jinx them!
He wasn't sure if things would last
Enrique Iglesias admitted to PEOPLE en Español that his relationship with Anna Kournikova was "the only serious relationship I've had in my life."
However, when he was asked if he could picture being with her for the long haul, he threw a curveball. "I don't know," Iglesias said. "The only thing I can say is that, in my opinion, Anna, whether we are together or not, would be an ideal mother." So he was content on having a baby mama but not a wife? Okay. Got it. We think?
This is the thing about Iglesias and Kournikova: they seem to get a kick out of giving wayward responses during interviews, which only leave the public with even more questions about their mysterious, under-the-radar romance.
A little over nine years after that interview, the marriage question popped up once again. This time, it was E! News who was attempting to pry the information out of the Grammy award-winning artist. "Who knows what the future holds … or the past … haha," he answered. Ay dios mío.
