Spot Dictation
A new technology might change the way people watch movies in the theater. Instead of watching a film on the screen, you would enter the scene (1) and watch the action take place all around you. This is what Virtual Reality, or VR, and 360-degree video promise to(2)give audiences. The idea is to make you feel like you are in the movie. Both professionals and amateurs (3)have made these kinds of films. To watch, people wear expensive headsets that cover their eyes and ears. Many people use their smart phones, placed (4)in a special cardboard box. Then, they hold it up to their eyes to watch.
People are experiencing the technology in many places. South by Southwest (SXSW) is a media and technology conference held every year in Austin, Texas. This March, peopleput on (5)headsets there to watch part of a funny crime film shot in VR in Baltimore, Maryland. The people who produced “Career Opportunities in Organized Crime,” say it is the firstfull-length (6)film made in 360-degree Virtual Reality. But with 360-degree filming, there is a problem. If viewers looked away from the main action on their headset and “turned around”(7),they could see the crew shooting the film(8). To solve this problem, they made the film a “mockumentary,” in other words, a fake(9)documentary. In this way, making the film became part of the story. VR headsets are also being used to view films that allow people to travel around(10)the world without leaving home. A company called YouVisit has films that can be used toadvertise trips (11). It can also help people who cannot physically travel (12), but want to feel the experience of going places.
VR headsets have been used in some computer games. But many people experience sea sickness (13), or nausea, when using them. Also at South by Southwest recently, companies showed off(14)other movie technologies. Some used special screens. But this high technology comes at a high cost(15). A company spokesman said the video and sound system costs $500,000 (16)to set up. That is more than average movie theaters would pay. It is too early to know how these technologies will change the movie business. Theater owners are not quick to(17)invest a lot of money in devices that might be popular for only a short time. However, the movie theater business faces tough competition (18)from home theater systems, online streaming and piracy(19). Theaters may have a brighter future (20)if they can provide a movie experience that people cannot get at home.

Spot Dictation
Image of clowns changing over the years,小丑形象的前世今生。
(4)represent (11)necessarily (15)threatening-looking (16)nationwide panic
Clowns are almost everywhere these days in popular culture. They can be seen in movies, on television shows, at musical performances(1), and sometimes just walking in the streets. Clowns are perhaps best known for(2)performing in traveling circuses. They have been making crowds laugh for generations(3). But what theyrepresent (4)in popular culture has changed a lot over the past 400 years. Clowns have existed in different forms for a long time. Researchers havefound evidence (5)of clowns in ancient Rome, China, and Africa. Their job was to make the ancient rulers laugh.
Clowns began appearing in the form we recognize today in the 17th century, as a character known as a harlequin. They were common in European theater, and played a character who acted foolish or played tricks(6). Clowns from Europe arrived in North America after England began exporting circuses, with their clowns, other performers and trained animals(7). Starting in the early 1900s, circus shows were very successful in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, the popularity of clowns grewbecause of television(8). Bozo the Clown appeared in a number of TV programs for children.
Also in the 1960s, McDonald’s, the fast-food business(9), chose a happy clown to appear in its advertisements. Today that company mascot, Ronald McDonald, is world famous. However, the image of a happy clown is largely an American creation(10). In other cultures, he says, the clown character is not necessarily (11)good. At first, clown shows were meant for adults(12), not children. In fact, clown characters were meant to be a critique of society or projections of the fears and concerns (13)of everyday people. Then, in the autumn of 2016, many Americans began developing real concerns (14)about clowns. There were reports of threatening-looking(15)clowns trying to frighten both children and adults. Although there were usually no reports of violence, and many of the reported sightings were later found to be false, this caused a nationwide panic(16). Even today, clowns have continued to play a strong presence (17)as a dark or violent character. While clowns may be popular in the media, the attention is not always wanted(18). For people who work as -- or are training to be -- clowns, the “bad clown” image does not make their job easier. In 2008, British researchers asked 250 children about clowns. The boys and girls were four to sixteen(19)years of age. The University of Sheffield survey found that most children did not like clowns, while many feared them. For most people who work as clowns, their job is to make people happy and laugh(20).
