MOVIE NIGHT SERIES – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Tuesday 10th of October, the Pearl will be screening E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial a 1982 American science fiction fantasy film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg.
It tells the story of Elliott (Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return home while attempting to keep him hidden from their mother and the government.
Released on June 11, 1982 by Universal Pictures, E.T was an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time—a record it held for eleven years until Jurassic Park, another Spielberg-directed film, surpassed it in 1993. It is the highest-grossing film of the 1980s.
Nominated for nine Academy Awards, it was widely acclaimed by critics as a timeless story of friendship, and it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made in a Rotten Tomatoes survey. In 1994, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Ladies and gentlemen, the pearl and the Glamourous jazz band “OLD SHANGHAI“ is back and invites you to a unique 1920’s swing night on Friday 14th of October 2017
“OLD SHANGHAI“ is a jazz quartet with a difference, performing a unique mix of modern rock and pop songs in a vintage style. The band is inspired by the American Youtube sensation Postmodern Jukebox, adapting some of PMJ’s most popular hit songs by Nirvana, Daft Punk, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Fergie.
They also write their own arrangements of modern songs, giving chart hits that everyone knows a retro spin which will delight audiences of all ages.

MOVIE NIGHT SERIES–Scary Movie
Tuesday 17th of October
Tuesday 17th of October, the Pearl will be screening Scary Movie a 2000 American horror comedy film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. The film is a parody of the horror, slasher, and mystery film genres. Several mid- and late-'90s films and TV shows are spoofed, and the script is primarily based on the '90s hit horror films Scream (1996) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).
The film was originally titled "Last Summer I Screamed Because Halloween Fell on Friday the 13th", but was changed to Scary Movie in homage to the production title of Scream, which was also released through Dimension Films. The first in the Scary Movie film series, it was followed by four sequels: Scary Movie 2 (2001), Scary Movie 3 (2003), Scary Movie 4 (2006), and Scary Movie 5 (2013).
Despite generally mixed reviews from critics, the film was a box office success !

《驚聲尖笑》（英语：Scary Movie）是一部2000年美國喜劇片，由基能·韋恩斯執導，影片主要以「惡搞、戲弄」為宗旨，將90年代的電影全部拙劣地愚弄一番，其中包括《驚聲尖叫》三部曲、《是誰搞的鬼》、《厄夜叢林》、《刺激驚爆點》甚至《莎翁情史》也被拿來大開玩笑，顛覆了傳統好萊塢電影的傳統。
但是這樣一部惡搞的電影並沒有受到冷落，全球票房超過2億7千萬美元，大跌專家眼鏡。也因此，雖然第一部電影標語是「無情、無恥、無續集」(No mercy, no shame, no sequel)寫明沒有所謂的續集，到隔年馬上推出了第二部，而冠以"我們說謊了"(We lied)的標語，顯示了驚聲尖笑的受歡迎程度。目前驚聲尖笑系列已經上映了5部。

Concert – Cotton club night at the Pearl

After 19 years and 5000 shows, the venerable institution of blues, Shanghai's world famous "Cotton Club " shut its doors on March 25 2017. For one night only, The Pearl will pay a musical homage to the Cotton Club featuring the original Cotton Club band, led by inimitable Blues legend, guitarist Greg Smith.
The Royal Hombres have been a fixture on the Shanghai music scene from the beginning of time. They held court at the Cotton Club for nineteen years and their music reflects an eclectic mix of blues, jazz and funk. The band is led by American guitarist Greg Smith with Jorland Paulino on bass, Francesco Perre on drums and Matt Cadillac Cooper on guitar and vocals.

MOVIE NIGHT SERIES – This Is Spinal Tap
Tuesday 24th of October
Tuesday 24th of October, the Pearl will be screening This Is Spinal Tap a 1984 American rock music mockumentary comedy film.
The film portrays the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap. The film satirizes the wild personal behavior and musical pretensions of hard rock and heavy metal bands, as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rock documentaries of the time. The three main members of Spinal Tap—David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel—are played by actors McKean, Shearer, and Guest, respectively. The three actors play their musical instruments and speak with mock English accents throughout the movie. Reiner appears as Marty Di Bergi, the maker of the documentary. Other actors in the movie are Tony Hendra as group manager Ian Faith, and June Chadwick as St. Hubbins' interfering girlfriend Jeanine.
In 2002, This Is Spinal Tap was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry.

1982年，英国传奇重金属乐队Spinal Tap摇滚乐团红极一时。电影导演马蒂（罗伯·莱纳 Rob Reiner 饰）是Spinal Tap乐团的一位忠实粉丝。Spinal Tap乐团要来美国举行一次复出巡演，马蒂则为Spinal Tap乐团拍摄随行纪录片。本部仿纪录片刻意杜撰出一个英国摇滚乐团Spinal Tap，活灵活现的刻画出了摇滚乐团台上台下表里不一的嘴脸，对当代摇滚乐做出了尖锐的讽刺和嘲讽。

HALLOWEEN MOVIE NIGHT SERIES – Halloween

Tuesday 31st of October, for halloween night, the Pearl will be screening Halloween a 1978 American slasher film.
The film is the first installment of the Halloween franchise and spawned seven sequels, as well as a remake and its sequel. In the film, on Halloween night in 1963, Michael Myers murders his sister in the fictional Midwestern town of Haddonfield, Illinois. He escapes on October 30, 1978 from Smith's Grove Sanitarium, and returns home to kill again. The next day, Halloween, Michael stalks teenager Laurie Strode. Michael's psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Loomis, knowing Michael's intentions, goes to Haddonfield to find and stop him.
It was one of the first horror films to introduce the concept of the killer dying and coming back to life again within the same film. In 2006, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Some critics have suggested that Halloween may encourage sadism and misogyny by audiences identifying with its villain. Several of Halloween's techniques and plot elements, although not founded in this film, have nonetheless become standard slasher movie tropes.
