(University of Bologna)

Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School

All the essential steps to create a finished Filigree jewel will be shown during the course, from the making of the wire to the finishing of the final piece. In addition to the teaching of the traditional technique, there will be a part dedicated to the different kinds of multiple wires interlacing, useful to create decorative parts and solutions in the Filigree jewellery. Valentina has personally invented a special language in order to easily remember all the multiple combination of the wires.

What is more she will personally follow each student during his/her creative approach, focusing on the design and aesthetic of the final project.

At the end of the intensive course, each student will have created and realized a finished silver Filigree piece of jewellery, unique and ready to wear.

Provided Material:

A Filigree Kit will beprovided for each student,

The cost of the filigree kit is 60$

It includes:

Pure silver wire to make the Filigree wire:4g

Filigree pure silver wire ready made: 8g

Flat silver 925 wires of 0.5 and 0.7mm thickness to make the Filigree structure:6 g

Copper and brass wire of different thicknesses for the interlacing exercises

Silver powder already mixed with boraxnecessary to solder the Filigree pieces

Valentina will bring a Visual Map of the course, where the students will notice the different kinds of Filigree shapes and structures, the symbolic language of the interlaced wires and many other little details of the Filigree technique. All the students are welcomed to take pictures and video of every image and demonstration provided by the teacher. Valentina will bring filigree originalbooks and catalogue about the Italian filigree to provide to the students visual knowledge and inspiration about possible designs for their pieces.

Starting from the twisting technique of metal wires, you will discover the endless possibilities of weaving, and intertwining and filling in the wire.

Under the guidance of the teacher, every student will have the possibility to create a wearable piece working the silverwith special hand-made pliers, in order to ‘weave’ an unique jewel, interlacing a centuries-old technique with your own unique hand trait.

What is more the knowledge of the traditional technique, every student will be followed personally through a creative process, focused on empowering each unique artistic language. Italian Filigree Techniques

The first finds of Filigree jewellery can be traced back in 2.500 B.C. in the mythical city of Troy and in the city of Ur, ancient capital of the Sumerians. In ornaments recovered from Phoeniciansites, such as Cyprus and Sardinia, patterns of gold wire are laid down with great delicacy on a gold background. It is said that the art was advanced to an higher perfection int the Greek and Etruscan Filigree from the 6th to the 3rd centuries B.C. The Etruscan population lived in Etruria, a region of Central Italy, located in an area that covered part of what are now Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria.

Still nowadays it is unknown how this ancient artisans could make such thin wires, and the most plausible hypothesisis that they used a very similar die plate that it is used by modern jewellers. The process of the Filigree technique has not been changed until today: thecurrent way of working the metal wires has a history 5,000 year long.

Today the most active place for this ancient art in Italy is Campo Ligure, a little and beautiful village in the north of Genova. It is situated on the Ligure Sea side, where the Filigree arrived around the year 1000 thanks to the relationships that the Maritime Republics had with the East through the Crusades.

Valentina has learned this ancient art in Campo Ligure's old workshops , where the machines for the the making of the Filigree wire date back 150 years and the production follows the slow rhythm ofthe handmade work.

She combines the traditional way of working with unique and personal designs, creating not only jewellery, but also hybrids between jewellery and clothes, in which the hand- woven Filigree is embroideredon handmade clothing.
