Bad news for fans of the after-after party. Amber Lounge, that 5am hell hole of good times, is closed for now. Management tells us they plan to re-open the late night club in a different spot in two months, although the exact location is still "a secret." In the Shanghai F&B world that often translates to "It ain't gonna happen," so don't hold your breath.
This isn't the first time Amber Lounge has closed, however. In late 2013, rumored swirled that Amber 1.0 was subject to a buzz-harshing police raid, prompting the late night club's relocation to a second location across the street in a former KTV den.
Another blow to China's alternative music scene came in the form of a very serious police drug raid on a Shenzhen rave in February, leading to 118 partygoers testing positive for drugs (mostly marijuana) and up to 50 expats being detained. Shanghai hasn't had a venue raided by police recently, but if one were to happen our bet would be on places like Amber being targeted again, so as always, exercise caution.
RIP Amber, and may your third resurrection be swift.
