It’s official, Carly Rae Jepsen is set to return to Beijing in October! The Canadian pop star will make the first of three Chinese stops in Beijing on Oct 16 before continuing her world tour with two dates in Shanghai, Oct 20-21.
Carly who? For most, Jepsen exploded onto the charts in 2012 with "Call Me Maybe," a summer anthem for love-struck tweens in need of emotional release. Her follow-up album, E·MO·TION, and its first single "I Really Like You" (and Tom Hanks-starring video) – as sugary as it was shoutable – solidified her following and certified Jepsen’s status as an international pop icon.
Though her original success may be attributed to her "pure pop pleasures," Jepsen’s current success is a result of her constant experimentation with her own music. The Canadian star has remained true to her pop roots without inhibiting her stylistic growth and maturation. Though her songs are still largely dedicated to the messy musings of love and longing, Jepsen has moved on from solely producing carefree, lighthearted numbers. In E·MO·TION, the singer-songwriter had already begun to deviate from the easy tones set in her previous album, Kiss. Critics noted the '80s RNB and retro notes pulsing between the saccharine pop melodies. Jepsen's growing maturity has allowed for a few moodier tracks to sneak through alongside her by and large upbeat, romantic-to-the-point-of-goofy hits.

Jepsen made her Beijing debut at last year's Grammy Festival, playing alongside the likes of Pharrell Williams, Daya, and OneRepublic. Those who missed that performance can look forward to seeing her in the comparatively cozy space of Liangmaqiao's Century Theater come Oct 16. Although, as is the case with all big acts in the capital and their penchant for last-minute cancelations, we'll call it maybe until the curtain rises.
