Tonight, fashion and joy!
As the barometer of global fashion culture, American pop music reflects the constant evolution of pop culture as various music styles and genres emerge one after another with the advancement of time, setting off a storm in the world.
Upon hearing names from Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin,Roy Orbison to James Brown, Michael Jackson, Madonna, then Bruno Mars, LadyGaga, and Black Eyed Peas, these melodies will surely go off in your heart. They are voices of American pop music and our source of sensation.
On August 25 to 26, we give Chinese city elites the most authentic American sing and dance show in Majestic Theatre, a theatre with an antique feel created with billions yuan of redecoration. Each song, each dance, each line being spoken, and each beam of light will inspire joy and happiness. At One Night In America, you will relive the highlights of the century long history of American pop music within 100minutes.
100 Years’ History in 100 Minutes
In 1950s, America saw an era of peace and tranquility as the Second World War ended and the economy rose rapidly. American youth started to search for new spiritual pursuits as they led a life of abundance. Rock androll, with its simple and straightforward rhythm and themes about personal characters, freedom and even rebels, seemed to hit right in the spot of American youth back then. Therefore, we saw Elvis Presley wrote Jailhouse Rock when he was 18, sending the prisoners on a high; and Bill Haley expressed his zeal of incessant rockand roll with Rock Around the Clock.Besides those rock and roll extremists who shouted and chanted, there were also“gentle” rock and roll singers who pursued their own tones. Chuck Berry’s Johnnie B Goode gave those disobedient people a brand new way to go up against the world: you can live aconventionally disciplined life, but as long as you have rock and roll in your heart, you are not astray from the right path.
The 1960s and 1970s are years of disturbance and the Woodstock Music & Art Fair was born at that time. America lost in the Vietnam War, leading to a post-war emotional unrest, and the longing for peace and equality were brewing in the hearts of American youth. Woodstock was born to the occasion under the theme of peace, anti-war, equality and inclusiveness. It was an unprecedented music festival in terms of both its scale and the star-studded lineup. More than 450,000 people participated in this music revelry; the most popular singers, including Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, were on stage one after another. Woodstock gave everybody an ideal world of freedom with the purest rock and roll.
At the same time, Hip-Hop started to catch on. Hip-Hop is rooted in black music and represents the attitude of “be happy even when life is not so good”. Hearing I Feel Good sang by James Brown, you can see it in your imagination that the string on his guitar was broken as he was playing with such passion; and I Will Survive sang by Gloria Gaynor would give you a glimpse of the feelings of dying people when they hold onto their last gasp to hear out acomedy. Music composed in that age is full of vitality, shedding a beam of light in people’s heart even though it is just pieces of notes and melodies.
After 1980s, American economy started to recover, which laid down the breeding grounds for the reckless and wild development of pop music of various themes and genres. MTV was born at that time, making it popular among people around the world to mimic Michael Jackson’s hip movements in black suit and long white socks; Madonna’s Like AVirgin raised the feminist consciousness; Nirvana’s “song of deodorant” - Smells Like Teen Spirit - made alternative rock mainstream; MC Hammer gave Hip-Hop teens in the 1990s a newmusic direction with his U Can’t TouchThis…
Today, American pop music has already been spread around the world, and its stories are to be continued.
